p. 94- " 'I'll let Pete do all the worrying. Not me. I'm not worried.' "
In Fahrenheit 451, the government censored and brainwashed the community, making them think they're happy and not worried. (sarah)
p. 23 (online book)- " 'Will you turn the parlour off?' he asked. 'That's my family.' 'Will you turn it off for a sick man?' 'I'll turn it down.' She went out of the room and did nothing to the parlour and came back. 'Is that better?' "
Mildred refusing to turn off the parlour shows her (and many other people's) "addiction" to the technology. (sarah)
p. 184- " 'They're faking. You threw them off at the river. They can't admit it.' "
The police not giving up on a chase and framing an innocent bystander shows what lengths they will go to to keep the people's "trust." (sarah)
p. 30 (online book)- " 'My uncle said the architects got rid of the front porches because they didn't look well. But my uncle says that was merely rationalizing it; the real reason, hidden underneath, might be they didn't want people sitting like that, doing nothing, rocking, talking; that it was the wrong kind of social life.
This shows that the government even changed the physical form of houses to prevent people getting ideas. (sarah)
p. 9- " 'You think too many things,' said Montag uneasily."
This quote shows Montag recognizes Clarisse as a threat to society, but doesn't want to turn her in. It also shows that people in Fahrenheit 451 don't think at all and Clarisse is an exception. (sarah)
They can't admit that was merely rationalizing it, They can't admit they're lost. They won't admit they're killing the world, And they won't admit they're burning, Burning at almost no cost. (sarah)
